About Matt:
Matt Shepley has a friendly, straightforward, no-nonsense Trauma-Informed approach to Mental Health Recovery, ADHD & PTG Life Coaching, and Peer Support.
Matt has battled and successfully overcome both Single Event PTSD and Complex PTSD. Diagnosed with combined ADHD at the age of 44, he has deeply researched the comorbidity between these conditions and has tailored his support to this cohort.
With years of experience as a Front Line Key Worker operating in the field of Adult Complex Needs in some of the country’s toughest and most economically deprived areas, Matt has gained profound insights into the inner workings of ADHD and PTSD in the community. He understands the barriers people face when dealing with the NHS, DWP, housing issues, personal finances (debt), and substance use as a form of self-medication.
Since 2019, Sole Survivor PTSD Support CIC has facilitated weekly face-to-face PTSD and ADHD peer support for over 70 clients around the North West of England, including a drop-in service for a homeless and refugee support organisation in Birkenhead, Wirral.
Continually humbled by people’s resilience and will to live instead of exist, Matt is motivated to support those trying to make sense of their lives and move forward.
A qualified PTSD Rewind and IEMT Trauma Practitioner, Matt has found his insights invaluable in treating PTSD and coaching individuals with ADHD. He is available for ADHD and Post Traumatic Growth PTSD Coaching, Rewindnand IEMT, which focuses on addressing PTSD symptoms without requiring clients to disclose their traumatic events.

No matter how hard you try, things just collapse around you, forcing you to rebuild everything yet again. You struggle to organise, prioritise, and complete work and home-related tasks within a suitable timeframe, which affects your relationships, finances, self-esteem, and confidence.
That was me.
Reflecting on my life, my battles, and ultimately my success, I realised I could put what I had learned through years of fighting, surviving, and evolving (mentally, emotionally, and spiritually) to good use.
Repackaging the negativity and flipping it into something positive, I created Coaching The Foundations of Life — a life coaching course designed for people like us, by someone who understands.
This 12-session 1:2:1 person-centred course is tailored for those who are coming to terms with ADHD or have been recently diagnosed. It focuses on addressing the impactful aspects of the condition while building on the innate ability and resilience we all have (but may not recognise) from the ground up.
We begin the course with an Outcome Star Assessment, using both the Mental Health Recovery and ADHD Outcome Stars. This gives us a clear picture of where you currently stand in life and provides a benchmark for progress.
Next, we work on your pillars—the key areas of your life that hold everything up. I identified four pillars for myself, and maintaining them made everything else in my life flow more smoothly. You will uncover your pillars.
Throughout the course, you will learn to set weekly goals, and I will be your accountability buddy. Together, we will dive deep into each area of your life that you want to improve. This journey is measured at the end with a reassessment using the Outcome Stars and a session focused on discovering your true life goals. With a solid foundation in place, you can start creating the space that is going to support your growth into the world you want, because you’ve created it.

I received a late-stage adult diagnosis of ADHD towards the beginning of this year.
It was bittersweet in that I was experiencing relief that I finally understood why I’ve always struggled in certain areas of my life and there was an element of grief for all the things that could have been.
I had tentatively applied to study for a degree at university which has been a dream of mine since I was a teenager, I’m 47 now.
I had a lot of self-doubt. I’ve spent the last 18 years or so caring for my children, my confidence was shattered and I was in a place mentally where I was considering giving up hope of ever getting there.
I booked eight sessions in order to initially get my head around exactly how my ADHD impacts me and to build strategies to help me to succeed in day to day life.
I knew straight away that I could work with Matt. He’s completely reliable, easy to talk to and for the first time, in a very long time, I felt like I had someone on my side who actually believed in me and my abilities to go back into education.
I like that Matt has a holistic approach. In the sense that any difficulties I was facing, ADHD related or not, he helped me to make sense of, talk through and then made me feel strong enough to deal with them.
Matt doesn’t do the work for you, he somehow facilitates a space where you’re doing the work and your own problem solving and he skilfully guides you to the solution. During my course of sessions I was dealing with a family bereavement and Matt went above and beyond to help prepare me for the funeral. I don’t think I would have coped as well as I did without his guidance.
I’m in a position now where I start my university induction next week and I’m hopeful and excited for my new beginning. I plan to keep using the tools that Matt has given me and thanks to my coaching I can now see a clear path to progress and I know exactly what to do when I face obstacles.
I’m living proof that it’s never too late to do what you dream of and without Matt’s support and encouragement, I’d probably have just slipped back into my easy old ways of just settling for whatever life throws at me and never really being proactive in guiding my future.
I understand my ADHD a lot better now and I can identify areas where I need extra support, this has given me so much more self-confidence. I’m finally ready to get out there, live my best life and start achieving my goals – better late than never!

“I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD. Nearly 50 years of negative conditioning and prejudicial learned behaviour had left me trapped in a repetitive (sometimes destructive) cycle, which had stalled my life. While the idea of unpicking all this was daunting, it was suggested that a coach might help me to understand and navigate this transition. I found Sole Survivor on the ADHD UK directory and chose to work with Matt, largely due to his structured approach and congruent profile.
Over the course of the 8 sessions, Matt’s process allowed me to take a view of my current position, identify areas for development and challenges to overcome, revisit and clarify my core values and start building a roadmap and methodology for moving my life in the direction I want to go. Having recently been diagnosed with ADHD I was looking into what support I could get, which would better help me not only understand myself more but why I do what I do.
I felt my life was forever going in circles and, at times, self-destructive.
After much research and endless nights trolling for self-help answers, I contacted Matt through the ADHD website.
Matt responded straight away. I needed that; for the first time in a long time, I felt someone wanted to listen and help.
Matt explained his 8-week program, and honestly, on that day, I didn’t realise how this would help and CHANGE my life. I had to put the work in, and with his support, I have changed my mindset. Boundaries, life coping skills and self-worth are what I’d developed at the end of my 8 sessions.
I know I still have things to work on and may slip back into old habits, but that’s ok my mindset is stronger, and I now have the skills to address this.

When I met Matt I was in a sorry state with my ADHD and I thought motivation would be an issue, I needn’t of worried, I’m pleased to say that the way that this course works, it works on the areas you need help in, so motivation was something that although I’d lost, I knew that I “had it” once, so we worked on that as one of my “Pillars” to get “it” back.
The sessions were well structured as we identified what pillars I needed to structure my life on.
Once identified I would spend the time in between sessions trying out strategies we came up with and tested them out. Not everything worked straight away but there were some pleasant surprises for me. The ones that were not as good were quickly identified and I tried the goal again.
The sessions are very much client led with Matt’s input being invaluable. The real test was the assessment at the end of the session using the Star Chart, where I could see how far I had come and I was proud.
The comparison between then and now was amazing. It was clear that I felt totally different, more positive about key areas of my life. It was a privilege to be coached by Matt.
All I would implore you to do if given the opportunity to do so is engage with the process to get the best from it.

Hi, I hope you are having a lovely day. My name is Sarah, and I am married to John. Sometimes in life, things happen, and it takes time to recover and get over them. Sometimes big things occur and nothing and seemingly no one can help.
We were glad that John was given the opportunity to have time allocated with you to help him. I know he was dubious as he had been given this support when issues first happened years ago. It was clear to me that after just 2 sessions, he was becoming a little more confident and able to begin to talk properly about the past.
I was always there in the past, but I honestly saw no signs of the breakdown he had until the day it all went terribly wrong. The support John had always received was basically non-existent from his work and everything always seemed so hopeless. I felt hopeless as I did not know what to do to help so medication from the doctor was the only solution…..
I just want to say thank you. I cannot say this without a tear as you have given me back my husband. He never left me in body but for many years John was there – just there. We existed and I always loved him but my John who I married was not there.
You have given him everything he needed, the confidence, and the ability to put it all into perspective and to use his strategies when little hiccups happen – we are moving in 12 weeks, and I really thought and expected him to wobble but no it is all right.
Above all you helped him to talk- John just didn’t speak as much for a long time. He spoke but didn’t chat….. he now chats…. 😊 but he is back to being our funny, chatty, and above all, happy husband, and dad.

“Before coaching sessions with Matt I’d spent my time rollercoastering through life trying to survive. Listening to other people about what I “should” do. I had never stopped to think about what I wanted or needed. This resulted in long periods of depression, anxiety and OCD symptoms.

“I think the best way of summing up my experience with the program is what I said in my final session: ‘If you went back in time and gave me the tasks I’m now doing routinely at the end of the program, to me at the start of the program; I would wonder what on Earth you were trying to do to me.
With Matt’s help, I’ve come a long way from where I was at the start, I certainly wouldn’t have seen myself being the version of me I am now without it.
Matt was great throughout, he was patient, and understanding, but also knew when and where I needed a little prod in the right direction. The program was easy to understand and very clear, as long as you apply yourself to this model it should work.
I made sure I did and I’m reaping the rewards now. At times it was hard pushing myself out of my comfort zone but I’m glad I did.
The program is also very client centred, with pretty much everything that I’ve ended up doing being my idea more or less.
Matt chipped in here and there with suggestions if I requested them but this was all at my request.
This focus on everything coming from me made the ultimate benefits to me that much greater, plus it’s given me confidence that I can make good decisions that will benefit myself.
Overall the program has given me a much clearer idea of what I want out of life, and how I need to go about reaching those goals. Now, it’s just a matter of continuing to apply myself like I did during the program. I would recommend this program to anyone who feels their life isn’t going where they want it to be going since it will give that bit of guidance and structure to let them get their life back on track.

I started the course 8 weeks ago struggling a little bit with some things in my life that were on the recovery outcome star.
We spent the next weeks working on it all and I feel like it has helped me a lot, I have improved my physical health and my social life as well which was a massive problem when we started the sessions.
It was very useful and made me understand life a bit more and how everything works in day to day life.

Having been recently diagnosed with ADHD and also coming out of a 23-year relationship with my wife, I started Life coaching sessions with Matt from Sole Survivor.
I found the sessions extremely helpful and supportive. I was able to set clear goals from week to week. Matt clearly set out pillars of strength to keep me on a stable path By the end of the course, I was able to see how far I had come, and the improvements I had made, with both my mental health and also my existing and new relationships. I got run over in my teens which began nearly a two-decade nightmare journey to get help. Help that I asked GPs and various doctors for but didn’t get, largely due to them not seeing me as someone with ADHD and instead as someone with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and later just a hypochondriac or someone only after drugs.
This made me much worse and I was given the wrong medications and therapies which was a very confusing time. I gave up on asking them for help but got addicted to pretty much everything, especially with a physical withdrawal.
Eventually, I got diagnosed with ADHD and after a few other hurdles like getting covid and then long covid, I was able to start getting back into the world and meeting new people I started going to the ADHD group in Birkenhead and then began coaching with Matt.
Before I started the coaching process I was unsure if I was physically or mentally able to start working again after many years of being out of work. With Matt’s help, I have been able to start volunteering and have updated my design portfolio with new work for the first time in years I’m now much better equipped to handle stuff that most people probably take for granted such as knowing how many hours I can work a day before getting too tired (something you definitely need to know before you start applying for jobs!) and refreshing skills I haven’t used properly for years.
This is why I think Matt is great at what he does. He was able to apply his skills to different areas of my life that I needed help with and he did it in a way that allowed me to have the realisations for myself through different tactics and strategies such as using a physical handwritten monthly planner and tracking the amount of time spent doing certain tasks and writing down the hours I was able to be creative in a day. This helped me build a better picture and understanding of what was going on and how to apply it to the overall goal of working again. The sessions seemed to fly by too (which if you have ADHD you know rarely happens) and they had a clear focus that built upon the previous sessions that ended with a goal based around something I wanted or needed to do that week, something that people with ADHD rarely do on their own accord so having help to visualise and prioritise what those tasks actually were was really helpful.
